After weeks of observing the vines awakening, the shoots lengthening, and the future grape clusters taking shape, we have arrived at one of the most decisive moments of the growing season: flowering.<\/p>\n At Castell d\u2019Encus, this process does not occur simultaneously across all vineyards. The diversity of elevations, exposures, and microclimates that characterizes our estate means that each parcel follows its own rhythm. Each flower is minute. When the time comes, it opens by shedding a small cap known as the calyptra, exposing its reproductive organs. If conditions are favorable, fertilization takes place and each flower develops into a future grape berry. In the mountains, this observation becomes even more intense. Temperature differences between our parcels can be significant, and flowering often progresses slowly uphill, like a green wave moving through the vineyards of Encus. There is also a detail that many visitors discover for the first time when walking among the vines at this time of year: flowering vineyards have a scent. It is a very subtle fragrance, difficult to describe, with hints of white flowers, fresh honey, tender grass, and sometimes a delicate citrus note. One must come close and pause for a moment. It is one of the most delicate and fleeting aromas of the entire winegrowing year.<\/p>\n Once flowering is complete, a new stage begins. The fertilized flowers will become small green berries. Over the coming weeks, much of the grapes\u2019 future size will be determined, and the long journey toward v\u00e9raison and ripeness will begin. Many months still lie ahead, and many variables will influence the final quality of the harvest, but a successful flowering is always an excellent way to begin that journey.<\/p>\n These days, as the first flowers open in the lower vineyards and the higher-altitude parcels prepare to follow, the mountain reminds us once again that every vintage has its own rhythm. Vine flowering is one of those discreet wonders that often goes unnoticed. It lacks the spectacular display of almond or cherry blossoms, yet it is within these tiny clusters of almost invisible flowers that the harvest we will pick in a few months begins to take shape.<\/p>\n
During these days, weather conditions are especially important. Mild temperatures, the absence of persistent rainfall, and a balanced canopy favor uniform flowering and successful fruit set. Conversely, episodes of cold, rain, or strong winds can hinder this highly delicate process. This is why winegrowers pay particularly close attention to the sky during these weeks.<\/p>\n
The vine itself also experiences a certain physiological tension during this period. It must allocate its resources between continued growth and securing its future crop. Balance is essential.
